Which Flowers Should You Choose to Wedding Traditions

November 1, 2009

Flowers have always been popular as decorations for weddings, and of course, brides and bridesmaids carry bouquets, whilst the groom and best man wear buttonholes. Traditionally the groom would choose a flowers for his buttonhole which also featured in his bride’s bouquet. This seems to be a reflection of the days when a knight would wear his lady’s colours as a display of his love.

The idea of a bride carrying flowers seems to have developed because the perfume was thought to drive away evil spirits. Both bride and groom wore garlands of flowers in Roman times, to represent new life and fertility. The Victorians were fond of sending love messages through flowers and the meanings of different flowers were widely understood. Brides naturally incorporated these meanings into their bouquets.

The tradition of a young flower girl walking ahead of the bride and scattering flower petals seems to have developed as a way of warding off evil spirits.

Flowers for a wedding are usually chosen for personal taste and colour schemes.
